SEO is an acronym for "search engine optimization" or "search engine optimizer." Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision that can potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk damage to your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners, including:
  • Review of your site content or structure
  • Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript
  • Content development
  • Management of online business development campaigns
  • Keyword research
  • SEO training
  • Expertise in specific markets and geographies.
Keep in mind that the Google search results page includes organic search results and often paid advertisement (denoted by the heading "Sponsored Links") as well. Advertising with Google won't have any effect on your site's presence in our search results. Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results, and it costs nothing to appear in our organic search results. Free resources such as Webmaster Tools, the official Webmaster Central blog, and our discussion forum can provide you with a great deal of information about how to optimize your site for organic search.
Before beginning your search for an SEO, it's a great idea to become an educated consumer and get familiar with how search engines work. We recommend starting here:
If you're thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you're considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.
Some useful questions to ask an SEO include:
  • Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?
  • Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?
  • Do you offer any online marketing services or advice to complement your organic search business?
  • What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?
  • What's your experience in my industry?
  • What's your experience in my country/city?
  • What's your experience developing international sites?
  • What are your most important SEO techniques?
  • How long have you been in business?
  • How can I expect to communicate with you? Will you share with me all the changes you make to my site, and provide detailed information about your recommendations and the reasoning behind them?
While SEOs can provide clients with valuable services, some unethical SEOs have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to manipulate search engine results in unfair ways. Practices that violate our guidelines may result in a negative adjustment of your site's presence in Google, or even the removal of your site from our index. Here are some things to consider:
One common scam is the creation of "shadow" domains that funnel users to a site by using deceptive redirects. These shadow domains often will be owned by the SEO who claims to be working on a client's behalf. However, if the relationship sours, the SEO may point the domain to a different site, or even to a competitor's domain. If that happens, the client has paid to develop a competing site owned entirely by the SEO.
Another illicit practice is to place "doorway" pages loaded with keywords on the client's site somewhere. The SEO promises this will make the page more relevant for more queries. This is inherently false since individual pages are rarely relevant for a wide range of keywords. More insidious, however, is that these doorway pages often contain hidden links to the SEO's other clients as well. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.
If you feel that you were deceived by an SEO in some way, you may want to report it.
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) handles complaints about deceptive or unfair business practices. To file a complaint, visit: http://www.ftc.gov/ and click on "File a Complaint Online," call 1-877-FTC-HELP, or write to:
Federal Trade Commission

Washington, D.C. 20580
If your complaint is against a company in a country other than the United States, please file it at http://www.econsumer.gov/.
  • Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue. Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:
    "Dear google.com,
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories..."
Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for "burn fat at night" diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.
  • No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.
  • Be careful if a company is secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do. Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or "throwaway" domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google's index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it's best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to "help" you. If an SEO has FTP access to your server, they should be willing to explain all the changes they are making to your site.
  • You should never have to link to an SEO. Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of "free-for-all" links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that don't affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines -- at least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.
  • Choose wisely. While you consider whether to go with an SEO, you may want to do some research on the industry. Google is one way to do that, of course. You might also seek out a few of the cautionary tales that have appeared in the press, including this article on one particularly aggressive SEO: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002002970_nwbizbriefs12.html. While Google doesn't comment on specific companies, we've encountered firms calling themselves SEOs who follow practices that are clearly beyond the pale of accepted business behavior. Be careful.
  • Be sure to understand where the money goes. While Google never sells better ranking in our search results, several other search engines combine pay-per-click or pay-for-inclusion results with their regular web search results. Some SEOs will promise to rank you highly in search engines, but place you in the advertising section rather than in the search results. A few SEOs will even change their bid prices in real time to create the illusion that they "control" other search engines and can place themselves in the slot of their choice. This scam doesn't work with Google because our advertising is clearly labeled and separated from our search results, but be sure to ask any SEO you're considering which fees go toward permanent inclusion and which apply toward temporary advertising.
  • What are the most common abuses a website owner is likely to encounter?
  • What are some other things to look out for? There are a few warning signs that you may be dealing with a rogue SEO. It's far from a comprehensive list, so if you have any doubts, you should trust your instincts. By all means, feel free to walk away if the SEO:
    • owns shadow domains
    • puts links to their other clients on doorway pages
    • offers to sell keywords in the address bar
    • doesn't distinguish between actual search results and ads that appear on search results pages
    • guarantees ranking, but only on obscure, long keyword phrases you would get anyway
    • operates with multiple aliases or falsified WHOIS info
    • gets traffic from "fake" search engines, spyware, or scumware
    • has had domains removed from Google's index or is not itself listed in Google

1. Make it easy for visitors to bookmark your website. Place 'Bookmark this site' and 'Bookmark this page' buttons on each page of your site. Here is a piece of script that makes it easy to do it: http://www.hypergurl.com/bookmark.html.

2. But we are in the Web 2.0 era, so apart from buttons to bookmark your site in their browser, you should also add buttons so that people can bookmar your site in their favorite social bookmarking website. These buttons are often called chicklets. You can get some chicklets here for your blog: http://3spots.blogspot.com/2006/02/30-social-bookmarks-add-to-footer.html, or you can use this site: http://www.addthis.com/ to get one button covering multiple bookmarking sites.

3. Speaking of buttons, a third type of button that you should have is an RSS feed button. This can be a simple RSS button for people to add to their sites, or a MyYahoo RSS feed button so that people can add your site to their MyYahoo pages. In order to add these types of buttons to your site, your site needs to be able to generate an RSS feed. The simplest to achieve this is to add a blogging component to your site, since most blogging tools such as Wordpress already has RSS feeds built in.

4. This brings us to the next tip - regular updates to your website. Adding regular content to your website has two advantages: it pulls new visitors who might have your RSS feeds published on their sites, and it also pulls search engines. Search engines love new content and they come back more often to your site if your site is updated often. Updates are easy to do if you have a blog attached to your website, but it is also important to add new content to the regular side of your website. The best type of content to make people stick around is useful information for your visitors such as tips, tutorials, guides and comparisons.

5. Make a newsletter available on your website. Even though it is becoming more and more difficult to get people to sign up for newsletters, it is a very important component of a website and should not be ignored - rather spend more attention on this aspect and even 'bribe' people with a free gift of some sort to sign up for your newsletter. If you can manage to get your visitors to sign up for a newsletter you can send out regular updates of new content and invite people to read the content on your website - thereby pulling them back to your site.

6. Add a 'Recommend this site to a Friend' form so that your visitor can email your website to a friend, or friends. Be careful with this one though since spammers love email forms on websites. Ask your website to install a script that has spam protection built in.

7. Make it easy for people to contact you. Have a contact form on each page. Ensure that you have multiple ways for people to contact you, whether by phone, online chat or email forms. Once again, make sure that your form is protected against spammers.

8. An FAQ section on your site that answers your visitors' questions is important to build trust. These questions are also an easy way to add new content to your site! You could assemble these questions from questions that are regularly asked by off-line customers in your bricks and mortar business. This page can help establish trust in you and your product or service. And trust is absolutely essential if you want to get people to buy from you.

9. Make it easy for people to navigate your site. Usability guru Jacob Nielsen recommends that web designers should keep website navigation as standard as possible. All menus and links should also be clearly marked as such. If people are confused with your website layout and cannot navigate easily from the one section to the next, they will leave quickly! For large sites a trail of 'breadcrumbs' at the top of each page showing the current location of each page in the hierarchy of each site, is indispensable.

10. Make your site interactive. We are moving more and more towards websites that offer interactive capabilities to visitors. This is a broad blanket term that covers anything from forums to blogs, from help desks to online chat support. You can also do online surveys and polls, or allow visitors to upload their own content to your site depending on the situation. Allowing your visitors to interact with your website has two advantages: it builds more content for your site, and it empowers your visitor and makes them feel in control of their website visiting experience.

1. Offer discounts to advertisers who spend more money or purchase a larger volume of ads.

2. Offer your advertisers a free incentive or bonus if they renew their ads. It might be something like "purchase 11 months

and get the 12th free. You could also offer them a copy of a product you might be selling if they renew their current contract term.

3. You just don't have to sell add space at the top or bottom of your pages or even in the left/right hand columns, you can sell space right smack dab in the middle of the page and have your page text "wrap around" the ad.

4. You can sell a lot more ads if you re-write some of the content of your pages to reference their particular product.

5. Offer potential ad customers free or additional listings on other parts of your site when they purchase regular ad space.

6. You can offer an honest endorsement of your advertisers product, if they would be willing to supply you a copy to try out.

7. In addition to #6, offer to place your personal review or testimonial near their advertisement. This always acts like a magnet to draw visitors to the actual ad.

8. Dust off the P.T. Barnum in you and try offer special deals like "pay for two months upfront and get a third month at no charge" or "buy one get one free" or something similar to that. Use you creative mind!

9. If you website sells products that would be of interest to your potential advertisers, offer them (your product) as
"signing" bonuses for signing on as an advertiser on your site.

10. Give advertisers your personal guarantee that if they don't receive a certain amount of exposures, clicks etc., that you will give them another months worth of ad space for free.

They fail to write a business plan. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Not having a business plan means you dont have any firmly set goals. Along with a business plan you should have a marketing plan that clearly outlines your advertising budget and what you plan to do if something goes wrong.

They cant stick to what works. Instead of having and focusing on a few affiliate programs that work for you, become a chronic opportunity seeker and hop from one work at home business opportunity to another. You never give yourself a chance to grow a single business.

They dont know their business. People never get to know their business inside and out. They dont know what sets them apart from the rest, how their business helps to serve the public and what strategies to use to make it better.

They put more emphasis on the home part of work at home. They are so caught up with the notion of getting to work from home that never they actually come to terms with the fact that this is work. In fact it may be one of the hardest things you ever you do.

They dont put advice into practice. Theres a lot of information out there. Good, useful information to help you earn money online can be found both online and offline. Your business can take a 180 if you only implement it. But many people get information and tuck it away somewhere without ever using it.

They put web creation before content creation. They spend so much time trying to make their site pretty
That they forget to add any real information to get browsers to come back Your flashy welcome sign can only do so much.

They neglect their babies. Its either because they have too many websites or they get bored, whatever the reason many people forget to revisit their websites
and look at it from a consumer point of view. Do your links work, is your content up to date, is it easy on the eyes. Even if you have 50 websites you have to show them a little TLC every now and then.

They lose touch. They dont keep in contact with their list frequently enough. Its not as if your list is holding their breath waiting for an email from you but they did take the time to sign up to your newsletter, you can a least drop a hello.

They trade dollars for hours. Youll never earn money online by trading dollars for hours. It wont kill you to miss your favorite TV show or opt out of a movie. But many refuse to sacrifice a few hours of fun to make money online. They spend more time surfing the net for jokes and gossip than actually working. Quite surfing the net and get to work.

They dont understand the concept behind the task. If your promoting because its part of the job description your wasting your time. Its not enough to just do things, you need to know why you are doing it. Otherwise youll fail to see the bigger picture and youll continue to make the same mistakes over and over again.

In the first part of this article I explained that if you want to grow your online customer base then you must build a good stream of incoming traffic to your web site. We covered Search Engine Optimization, Pay Per Click Advertising, and Article Marketing. In Part Two we now look at Free Ebooks, Viral Marketing, Classified Advertising, and Advertising Swaps.

4. Free Ebooks

Ebooks are books that are made available in an electronic format. The beauty of ebooks is they cost virtually nothing to produce and distribute. Ebooks initially became popular as the perfect format for information products being sold and delivered online, but they have now been recognized as a very effective resource for building traffic.
After you have written an ebook you can give it away to visitors as a reward for subscribing to your mailing list or newsletter. Your ebook for traffic building does not need to be the same number of pages as a full-length book. Many ebooks being used as free incentives are in the range of 12 to 25 pages.

You can even recruit related businesses and web sites to give away your ebook to their customers. The other site benefits because their visitors get something for free. And you benefit because you reach new readers with your information including a link to your web site.

Many ebook authors include a few advertising and affiliate links towards the end of their ebooks which can lead to additional revenue, especially if their free ebooks are heavily distributed.

5. Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is any advertising method that propagates itself. It is built on the concept of a message spreading by 'word of mouth'. Two examples of viral marketing online are "Tell a Friend" forms, and Viral Ebooks.

The idea with viral marketing is to induce visitors or readers to pass along your marketing message to other sites or people, creating a potentially exponential growth in the message's visibility and response.

A "Tell a Friend" form is designed to get one person that you have already reached to recommend your site or service to a number of their friends. You can offer an incentive for them to make the recommendation, for example giving them a free report or ebook in return for recommending you to five friends.

To make a viral ebook, you use special tools to make your ebook rebrandable. In a rebrandable ebook, certain parts of your ebook are set up for customization. By doing this you enable your partners to insert their own business name, web site links, or even their own affiliate ID into your ebook. This gives them an additional incentive to pass on copies of it, ultimately helping you to promote your business and grow your traffic.

6. Classified Advertising

Classified advertising is a form of advertising which is particularly common in newspapers and magazines. Many online ezines and email newsletters offer classified advertising spots and advertising in these can be one of the best sources of targeted traffic.

The best traffic growth comes from carefully targeting your potential visitors and with classified advertising you have the ability to select newsletters and with an audience that closely resembles your own target audience.

With online classified advertising it is especially important to consider the position of the advertisement you are purchasing. An ad spot at the very top of an email newsletter will receive considerably more clicks than an ad spot further down the message.

And while we are on the subject of classified advertising, don't dismiss offline classified advertising as irrelevant. It is possible to run a classified advertisement in an offline publication such as newspaper or carefully targeted magazine and get an excellent response of readers checking out your web site.

7. Advertising Swaps

Once you have a mailing list of your own with several thousand subscribers consider setting up 'ad swaps' with other newsletters. Make a list of possible newsletters that would make good swapping targets. This list might include newsletters on the very same topic as yours, but it could also include publications on closely related topics.

A newsletter on copywriting, for example, might do an ad swap with another copywriting newsletter. Or they might swap with newsletters on related topics such as advertising, editing, and freelance writing.

Swapping ads one of the most effective low cost techniques for building traffic. There is only the opportunity cost of not having paid advertising in those spots of your newsletter. I can assure you that the traffic growth will be worth more in the long term than a one-off advertising payment from someone for a classified ad.

Are you an aspiring entrepreneur? Are you already in business for yourself, but are looking for a relatively inexpensive area in which to expand? Do you want to start a home based business that you can do without quitting your regular job?

If any of these cases apply to you – and you have an interest in the media industry – then read on. Here are 10 media related businesses that you can start for less than $10,000.

1. A Barter Publication

Everybody has stuff that they would like to get rid of. And everybody likes cheap stuff. You can bring these people together by starting a barter publication in your community. Revenue can be earned through subscriptions or advertising space sales.

2. Brochure Design

Every business needs good business brochures. If you have a knack for designing things, you can help businesses in your area by designing their brochure printing. Many small businesspeople are afraid to try doing this on their own, and would be more than willing to let you design their brochure printing (and pay you for it, too).

3. Copywriting

A copywriter is basically a freelance writer who writes for a variety of different businesses. Jobs would include sales copy, newsletters, articles, and many other things. It’s easy to get started as a copywriter: just search for “freelance writing” jobs.

4. Graphic Design

This is a popular entrepreneurial idea. You may be surprised to learn, however, that it is not very expensive to start up as a graphic designer. It just takes a bit of leg work to get your name and talent out there. Once you get established, though, it will go much more smoothly.

5. How-to Books

Yes, you can write books for a living, and you do not even have to deal with grouchy editors who constantly reject your work. How? By writing eBooks, which are just books in electronic format. Write about how to do something, and sell it electronically.

6. Write Jingles

If you are a music wiz, this one is for you. You can write the “jingles” for radio and TV commercials, and perhaps even TV shows.

7. Press Release Writing

While this could fall under the “copywriter” category, you could actually make a decent living writing nothing but press releases. Thousands of new businesses start up every year, and they all need good press releases to let the public know about them.

8. Restaurant Menus

If you love food, and graphic design is a talent that you possess, you can make money by designing menus for restaurants in your area. Simply ask the manager if he needs (or wants) a new menu designed.

9. Greeting Cards

You can produce your own line of greeting cards and turn a nice profit. Of course, you have to have a way with words, and you have to be at design. If you can do both, try your hand at writing and designing specialty greeting cards.

10. Transcripts

You would be amazed at how many transcripts need to be written. Everything from radio shows to commercials to TV shows need transcripts written for them. Get in on the action by offering to write them up for a fee.

Promoting your website can be a daunting task: it feels like there are thousands of ways to do it, but all of them take a lot of time or money for no guaranteed return. To help solve this problem, I've compiled a list of ten easy ways to promote your website.

1. Advertise in the Media. Now, you might have already ruled out advertising in newspapers and the like as too expensive, especially since the chances are your audience doesn't live in any specific local area. That mostly rules out radio, too, and TV is even more likely to be out of your reach. What you might not have realised, though, is that you should stop looking at the general media and start looking at the specialist media for your area. For example, if you run a house-buying website, you could advertise it in specialist property magazines, and even on 'lifestyle' cable channels that show programmes about moving home.

2. Write Your Web Address on Things. If your business has any physical objects, whether it's a product, a carrier bag or just the front of your office, make sure to write your web address on there. Even if people don't keep or remember the exact address, it at least lets them know that your website exists.

3. Give Out Leaflets. There's nothing wrong with a bit of old-fashioned paper promotion: leaflet as many areas as you can. The chances are that your website is targeted to a specific demographic rather than an area, but the post office will be surprisingly helpful when it comes to getting your leaflets where they need to go, if you ask them.

4. Go to Specialist Events. If there's some kind of trade fair for the industry your website is in, turn up to it and promote your website. While there might not be all that many people there, the ones who are there will be influential, and can get your site talked about.

5. Put it on Business Cards. It should go without saying, but once you've gone to all that trouble to set up a website, don't forget to put it on your business cards. After all, if you're relying on them to get people to phone you, why not give them the option of reading more about you on your website?

6. Astroturf on Forums. An often overlooked way of getting traffic to your website is to participate on forums related to the subject and put your web address in your signature. This gets you more traffic than you'd think, especially at very popular forums.

7. Create Controversy. A great trick to promote your website is to use it to say controversial things: as the saying goes, any publicity is good publicity. This works best if you say something that you know will be provocative to a certain kind of person, getting it linked from all over the place. Bear in mind, though, that this strategy is better for advertising-driven websites than it is if you're trying to build a reputation and make sales directly.

8. Keep a Good Blog. While more and more businesses are starting blogs, few of them are doing it right. If you're using your blog to publish product announcements in corporate-speak, it's useless. You need to remember a simple mantra, 'views not news' Make sure your blog has something interesting to say.

9. Buy Search Engine Ads. Many people seem to think it's some kind of admission of defeat, but search engine advertising can work very well, especially with keywords that aren't already cluttered with ads. If you do it right, you can get very targeted ads very cheap. Indeed, ironically, the more targeted the ads, the cheaper they tend to be.

10. Start an Affiliate Program. Finally, if you're selling something, don't forget that old standby of web marketing: the affiliate program. Offer visitors a cut of the profits if they can sell your products for you, and all of a sudden you've got a crack sales team raring to go. The only trouble with this plan is that everyone is doing it, so you'll need to offer a high percentage of your profits to your affiliates to make the offer attractive to them.
